UC San Diego Extension and the San Diego Public Library present NeXT

NeXT brings free Sally Ride Science Pre-College programs to San Diego Libraries

The missions of UC San Diego Extension and the San Diego Public Library share a common purpose to inspire and offer lifelong knowledge and skill development needs for the greater community. The Downtown Library and the network of branches in the library system provide a unique opportunity to expand UC San Diego Extension’s reach. In addition, UC San Diego Extension is able to offer a full suite of education and training programs designed to help a wide range of students prepare for what is next – whether it be inspiring them in STEAM education through Sally Ride Science or preparing them for college with test prep and counseling or training them for in-demand careers with specialized certificates.

Messy Science: In this workshop format class we explore the beauty, mysteries and facts about our planet earth. Using tools and materials from our modern world we will re-enact some of the physics, chemistry, and biology that make earth unique in the Known Space. Hands-on activities will be punctuated with sounds of boom, crash, zip and slime! The class is configurable to different lessons each focusing on an aspect of that include topics of glaciers, volcanoes, earthquakes, landslides, permafrost, sea level rise and tsunamis. During these workshops students will design things, test things, throw things, and stomp on things. Using our newfound knowledge of our earth system we will use our imaginations to make our planet a more fun place.

Squid Dissection: Squid. It's not just what's for dinner. In this hands-on class each student will get to help dissect a squid and learn all about their insides. They may even get to write their name in squid ink! This class will improve the students understanding of how to build their basic scientific research skills and how to apply these skills to their overall understanding of the many critters that fill our oceans. By gaining a better understanding of the organisms that occupy our oceans, we can build a deeper understanding of the oceans themselves and how to best take care of our world.
