Creating the Preliminary Round Entry
Your team's Preliminary Round Entry (PRE) is a six-and-a-half-page (maximum) description of their design. Your team's entry should include these six sections and address the following questions, but are not limited to just these questions:
Section 1: Your Toy or Game (no more than 1/2 page)
- What toy category did you choose?
- What is the name of your creation?
- What is the object or purpose of your toy or game?
- Who is the target market for your game or toy, and why?
Section 2: How Does it Work? (no more than 1/2 page)
- Explain your game or toy and how it works. Please be specific.
Section 3: Your Team (no more than 1/2 page)
- Where are you from?
- How did you work together to develop your idea?
- How did you divide up the responsibilities and complete your creation?
Section 4: Your Design Process (no more than two pages)
- How did you come up with your idea?
- How did you research your idea, e.g., books, people, the Internet?
- What steps did you go through to develop your design?
- What major challenges did you overcome with your idea and its design?
- What criteria helped you decide how to design your toy or game, e.g., cost, materials, and use of technology?
- How did technology help you design your toy or game and/or how does your toy or game use technology?
Section 5: Photos/Sketches of Your Toy or Game (no more than two pages)
- Your design drawings may be drawn by hand.
- You may include photographs, but they must be firmly attached (glue, staples, color copy of the whole sheet) to the entry page.
Section 6: Preliminary Round Entry (PRE) Expenses (no more than one page)
- Your team's toy or game must cost less than $150 to develop up to submission of your PRE. This amount includes donated materials, actual materials, materials in kind, etc. The team might not have spent any money by this point in their design, but if they have, they must provide an itemized expenses list. With their PRE, they must submit the expenses list along with a record of donated materials, plus all receipts (signed off by their coach). Please ensure all receipts are firmly attached (i.e. stapled) to the section. If you have not spent any money, please still specify this for us, so we know you have not left out a section of your entry.
Suggestion: Have unrelated people, "fresh eyes," read through your PRE. This is not only a good idea for catching any typos, but also to help clarify any unclear directions on how to use your toy or game. Your team's entry will be judged based on your PRE. Please make sure you proof-read your entry before you submit it to the judges. Please remember to put your Team ID Number on each page. Your ID number was assigned to you once your sign-up process was completed.
