(San Diego) - In August, a landmark educational journey began when teacher and astronaut Barbara Morgan completed her first space flight on STS-118. This October, Sally Ride Science™ and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), in collaboration with Northrop Grumman, invite teachers to continue the mission with “Join the Journey: Celebrating Teachers.” The two-day educator conference will be held Oct. 16 and 17 at the Marriott at the Renaissance Center in Detroit.

“Join the Journey: Celebrating Teachers,” will highlight STS-118, provide an overview of the shuttle mission’s educational objectives, and illustrate how teachers can bring real-world science into the classroom. The conference will feature an introduction by Dr. Sally Ride, best known as America’s first woman in space, and a presentation by Barbara Morgan. It will feature hands-on workshops with activities and information that teachers can take back to the classroom; a session on “Equity Strategies for the Classroom”; a panel discussion on “Visions of Teaching and Learning in 2020” with the leaders of national professional education organizations; an educator street fair with take-aways; and lunch with author Clay Morgan, Barbara Morgan’s husband.

The registration fee for “Join the Journey: Celebrating Teachers” is $50. Registration ends Oct. 10. For more information, visit  http://www.sallyridescience.com/conferences
