Astronaut Sally Ride and ExxonMobil Invite Girls to Explore Hands-On Science at George Mason University
Sally Ride Science, ExxonMobil, and George Mason University are teaming up to inspire young women to explore the exciting world of science. The Sally Ride Science Festival will take place on April 18, 2009 at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. The festival, presented by ExxonMobil and Sally Ride Science, is open to the public and runs from 11:00 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.
The Festival will bring together hundreds of upper elementary and middle school girls, parents and teachers for a day of science and socializing. The festival features discovery workshops for students given by local scientists and engineers, as well as workshops for parents and teachers on ways to support students' interests in science and math. A highlight of the festival will be an inspiring talk by cosmochemist Laurie Leshin, who serves as the director of sciences and exploration at the Goddard Space Flight Center and leads the largest science organization within NASA. The festival also includes lunch and a street fair with hands-on activities, booths, and music.
A registration fee of $20 includes the featured talk, lunch, workshops and the street fair. Advance registration is required.
